Halifax, NS, based In-Flight Safety formed in the small town of Sackville, NB, during the twilight of their undergrad degrees. The motivation to abandon their prescribed paths of study (fine art, computer sciences, geography, and classics) came in the form of a one-line email that said: “nice album”. That email was from David Bowie in reference to a handmade copy of their basement-recorded Vacation Land EP.

Their latest album We Are An Empire, My Dear was recorded in a 100-year-old schoolhouse during the dead of winter. The record combines pulsing bass, sparse piano, and hypnotic, pounding drums with hooky guitars inadvertently bathed in the neon colours of the 1980s. The first single, “Model Homes,” was featured on NBC’s series Chuck and subsequently on Degrassi: The Next Generation leading the band to ravenous fans of both shows. The group toured behind the effort throughout Canada and the US, including dates at the 2010 Winter Olympics, CMJ 2010 & 2009 and the Halifax Pop Explosion. 2010 culminated with an invitation to SxSW 2011.

This unassuming band creates music that is both cathartic and epic. Still they maintain a childlike sense of wonder as the search for new ears takes them further and further from home.

In-Flight Safety’s critically acclaimed Vacation Land EP arrived in 2004 and was followed in 2006 by the band’s debut LP, The Coast Is Clear. The latter went on to earn JUNO, two MuchMusic Video Award nominations and three East Coast Music Awards, including: Rising Star, Alternative Recording and Group Recording of the Year in 2007.

The five members of Nightbox grew up in the same town, went to the same school and fell in love with the same sounds. Then three years ago they moved to Toronto together, shacked up in an old Kensington Market red-brick and got down to business making sounds of their own.

After releasing their debut EP in 2011, critical and commercial reaction was noteworthy on a world scale. The music video for single “Pyramid” earned heavy rotation on Canadian music television stations, and the track was selected to appear on the prestigious French label Kitsune’s Maison Compilation 11. It was chosen by NME as a Top-10 download, stating it takes on “a fresh sound of its own”, while UK’s Dazed & Confused magazine raved it “takes a hedonistic approach with high energy results on a new breed of dance.” The EP’s release in Japan on Rallye Label, sold out 1,000 copies on its initial offering.

Nightbox proceeded to tear up festival tent stages on both sides of the Atlantic, most notably during their barnstorming sets for packed houses at Reading & Leeds and Ireland’s Electric Picnic Festival, where BBC exclaimed “The glitchy synths and the guitars sound delightful… and by jove do they know how to write a hook”, ranking Nightbox’s performance Top-10 of the entire festival. Chops were honed, experience was gained, and bonds were formed with thousands of new fans.

Artis Leon Ivey Jr., better known by the stage name Coolio, is a Grammy Award winning musician, rapper, actor and record producer. A true pioneer of hip-hop, Coolio’s work has been heard around the world spanning twenty years of hits from Gangsta’s Paradise to C U When U Get There.

Coolio began rapping from a young age and performed in many local Los Angeles rap contests as a youth. Coolio made connections in the Los Angeles rap scene and ended up joining the group WC and the Maad Circle in 1991. Their debut album was regionally successful but didn’t make much impact on a national scale.

Three years later, Coolio signed to Tommy Boy Records and released his debut solo album, It Takes a Thief. This album contained the hit single Fantastic Voyage; Coolio’s breakout song. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the biggest rap singles of the year.

In 1995, Gangsta’s Paradise became the official anthem for the blockbuster movie Dangerous Minds. It instantly hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the #1 single of 1995 for all genres. It’s global reach swept the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand.

The album Gangsta’s Paradise was released in 1995 and was certified 2X Platinum by the RIAA. Along with Gangsta’s Paradise, the album also contained the major hits in “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “Too Hot”. Soon after, Coolio released My Soul containing the hit C U When U Get There.

Over the next decade, Coolio released four more albums, “Coolio.com” (2001), “El Cool Magnifico” (2002), “Return of the Gangsta” (2006), and “Steal Hear” (2008) and appeared in numerous films and television programs. In 2008, Coolio hosted an online cooking show, Cookin’ with Coolio for the network My Damn Channel. A companion cookbook called Cookin’ with Coolio: 5 Star Meals at a 1 Star Price was released to critical acclaim.

Imperial State Electric was founded in 2009 by erstwhile Entombed and Hellacopters leader Nicke Andersson. After breaking up the Hellacopters one year prior, the accomplished drummer and guitar player initially set out to work on a solo album, performing every instrument á la Dave Grohl and his formative Foo Fighters, barring a few contributions from old friends like one-time Hellacopter bandmates Dregen and Boba Fett, plus Death Breath member Neil Leyton. But at the same time, Andersson had also launched a new band named Cold Ethyl, featuring guitarist Tobias Egge, bassist Dolf de Borst (previously of the Datsuns), and drummer Thomas Eriksson, which, in time, became Imperial State Electric. And so it was the latter band’s name gracing Andersson’s augmented solo sessions when they landed on record store shelves in March 2010, surprising many a fan with its straight-faced homage to ‘70s classic rock, glam, and power pop. ISE proceeded to hit the road and played to several large audiences on the European tour circuit, then started work on a sophomore full-length entitled Pop War — this time as a true band.

“The son of the late Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré inherited his dad’s dazzlingly fluid phrasing but clearly also digs the fiery African blues rock of bands like Tinariwen.`
- Rolling Stone

Vieux Farka Touré was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré, who died in 2006. Ali Farka Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father dissaproved due to the pressures he had experienced being a musician. Rather, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from family friend the kora maestro Toumani Diabaté, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed.

Vieux was initially a drummer/ calabash player at Mali’s Institut National des Arts, but secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Ali Farka Touré was weakened with cancer when Vieux announced that he was going to record an album. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him, and these recordings, which can be heard on Vieux’s debut CD, were amongst his final ones. It has been said that the senior Touré played rough mixes of these songs when people visited him in his final days, at peace with, and proud of, his son’s talent as a musician.

In 2005, Eric Herman (still Vieux’s manager today) of Modiba Productions expressed an interest in producing an album for Vieux; this led to Vieux’s self-titled debut album, released by World Village in 2007. Ali Farka Touré’s work to tackle the problem of malaria is continued as 10% of proceeds are donated to Modiba’s “Fight Malaria” campaign in Niafunké through which over 3000 mosquito nets have been delivered to children and pregnant women in the Timbuktu region of Mali. On this first album, Vieux pays homage to his father and follows Ali’s musical tradition, giving new versions of the West African music that is echoed in the American blues. The album features Toumani Diabaté, as well as his late father. One of the tracks, ‘Courage’, is on the soundtrack of the film The First Grader (2010).

On his second record, Fondo on Six Degrees (2009), Vieux branched out and presented his own sound: while remaining true to the roots of his father’s music he uses elements of rock, Latin music, and other African influences. The album received a great deal of critical acclaim from across the globe, and Vieux was clearly moving out of his father’s shadow.

In June 2010, Vieux performed at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. That month Vieux also released his first live album, LIVE. His live performances are highly energized and Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar, as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile, both of which captivate audiences from all audiences in spite of any language barriers (though Vieux does speak 8 languages).

In 2011 Vieux released his 3rd studio album, The Secret, so named because the listener will hear the secret of the blues with a blend of generations from father to son. It was produced by guitarist Eric Krasno (of the Soulive trio) and features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield. The title track is the last collaboration between Vieux and his late father. With the release of The Secret, Vieux Farka Touré has clearly established himself as one of the world’s rare musical talents and guitar virtuosos with a distinct style that always pays homage to the past while looking towards the future.

In April 2012, Vieux released The Tel Aviv Session (Cumbancha), a collaborative project with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel dubbed ‘The Toure-Raichel Collective’ that has been hailed by fans and critics alike as a masterpiece and one of the best collaborative albums in the history of international music, drawing comparisons to Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder’s legendary Talking Timbuktu album. With each new project, Vieux expands his horizons, embraces new challenges and further entrenches his reputation as one of the world’s most talented and innovative musicians.

Falco has said his main artistic purpose is “to stir up the dark waters of the unconscious.”

Tav Falco – The master of a raw and shambolic fusion of rockabilly, blues, and fractured noise, Tav Falco was, along with the Cramps, one of the earliest purveyors of what would come to be known as psychobilly, and he anticipated the fractured but hard-hitting blues wailing of the Gories and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion by close to a decade.

Falco put together the first version of his band the Panther Burns (named for a famous Tennessee plantation), a group whose revolving membership included Alex Chilton and James Luther Dickinson in its early incarnations. Falco then relocated to New York City, where he brought his frenetic roots music to the Big Apple’s then-thriving no wave scene, which led to Falco’s major-label release, Blow Your Top, a 1982 EP issued by Chris Stein’s (Blondie) Animal label. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Falco began dividing his time between Europe and the United States, and released a slow but steady stream of recordings with shifting Panther Burns lineups while holding down another career as an actor.

“Falco has appeared as an actor with small parts in films such as Great Balls of Fire! (1989 – USA), The Big Post Office Robbery (1992 – Hungary), Highway 61 (1991 – Canada), Downtown 81 (2001 – USA), and Wayne County Rambling (2002 – USA). Long a student of the tango under European and Argentine instructors, he also appeared in Dans Le Rouge du Couchant (2003 – France) as a tango dancer, choreographing his part in the film.” – from Wikipedia.

His latest CD Live In London At The 100 Club, was released in 2012.

SKARBONE 14 is more than ska; the band fuses music styles like cumbia, merengue or salsa, that enrich ska.

They’re a band with a great sense of humour and energy. Their festive ska-rock is coupled with lyrics, sometimes crazy, about the simple things of life and the worlds in which we live…

After more than 400 concerts in 9 years all over Belgium and in many countries of Europe (France, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Switzerland and Bosnia), SKARBONE 14 is embarking on a mini-Canadian tour.

SKARBONE 14 has shared the stage with…

Babylon Circus (Fr), Mad Caddies (US), Goran Bregovic (Sbr), The Toasters (US), Fishbone (US), The Skatalites (Jam), New York Ska Jazz Ensemble (US), La Ruda (Fr), Distemper (Ru), Catch 22 (US), Tryo (Fr), Sonic Boom 6 (Uk), Jaya The Cat (Nl), Rotterdam Ska Jazz Foundation (Nl), Wickeda (Bul), Guadalajara (Aut), Panonia All Ska Star Orchestra (Hu), Dubioza Kollektiv (Bih), La Troba Kung Fu (Sp), Skunk (Fr), Les Caméléons (Fr), Percubaba (Fr), Les 100gr de têtes (Fr), Marcel et son Orchestre (Fr) and many more…
