GranFondoOttawa

GranFondoOttawa – ReggioCapitale – on July 21st, 2012 is a cycling event on routes that quickly escape the City limits riding along quiet country roads through crop producing areas alongside river banks and vistas [some] having evolved into suburbs, [some] resisting change, offering welcome stretches under the shade of aged Oak & Maple trees finally ending back in Ottawa to enjoy the spoils of our efforts alongside fellow cyclists rehashing the day’s events talking about past and future trips and comparing notes on who was riding what and how fast, with food, drink and entertainment to cap it off.

■GranFondo means “Big Foundation” as in the rocky slopes shaping the Alps, Dolomites & Pyrenees.
■GranFondo means ascending 12% to 20% grades over 15,000′ in a day’s effort.
■GranFondo means “Big-Ride” with start lines numbering thousands while turning away many more at iconic events.
■GranFondo means timed sections to challenge the willing to push their limits but it is not a race nor a tour!
■GranFondo began in xc skiing & running with Italy & France expanding on the idea for cycling.
■GranFondo demands 100+ miles yet provides Medio/Corto distances for the masses to experience the Festas.
■GranFondo offers pure-Euro all-out races attracting pro-tour stage winners given the lure of $ in some events!

The Italians are ‘tifosi’ over the Maratona while the French “rendre folle” over L’Etape & LaMarmotte and call them cyclo-sportives mostly staged over famous routes across mountain passes inspiring Levi’s KingRidgeGranFondo, Axel’s ValleyFirstGranFondo and Ryder’s TourdeVictoria proving we caught the craze…… grazie Italia…. but the common link is a gruppo searching for a challenge beyond a long days’ ride…. with the look & feel of a tour event offering arches and banners and a hyped up start, feed-zones, pelotons, breakaways and ending with Festas & Expos.

Amos The Transparent

Although they claim to be transparent, Amos are anything but. They live between the light and the dark, sometimes in the shadows, occasionally in the dark, more often in the light. Their songs take them there. Quantum shifts between heavy and light, soft and hard, loud and quiet. Amos has been featured on Q with Jian Ghomeshi, who referred to them as “the Canadian Wilco”.

Whether they are sharing a stage with Patrick Watson, the Reason or Zeus, or headlining a show in Australia or SXSW music festival in the United States, Amos come alive when they perform.

Sound Of Lions

Sound of Lions was named Ottawa’s best new band of 2011 in XPress magazine’s year-end poll.

“Sound of Lions, is an Ottawa trip-hop band led by Whitney Delion. Her honey tones and melancholic musings form the basis of the songs that are time-stamped with a surging urgency that’s pretty irresistible. The band’s Centretown-soul tunes are hip-shaking good with a late-night mood, thanks to beatman Christian Awad’s cinematic samples.” – Ottawa Magazine.

Fevers

Fevers are an Ottawa-based five-piece and purveyors of independent, electronic pop. Theirs is a fresh take on a classic genre, combining indie rock and electronic music. They build on the work of current and past electronic artists to develop their own distinct sound—one that is at once wholly modern and informed by careful listening.

Capitol Beat

Capitol Beat began as a large group of friends who had played together in various ensembles. Many of the members had participated in a high school Motown cover group, Otis Lives, and after high school still wanted to play similar music. Frontman Liam McArdle began writing songs for a band that would come to possess a dynamic horn section, soulful vocals, and a tight rhythm section.

The respective members settled into Toronto in the fall of 2010. By early November the band had begun rehearsing in a cold dusty garage on Rains Avenue that would become the birthplace of The Capitol Beat, a Soul-Funk-R&B powerhouse.
